Craniosacral Therapy & Dental Treatment for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ)

Why do I need Craniosacral therapy as well as wearing my dental appliance?

In the treatment of TMJD, it has been discovered that healing can be enhanced if the bones of the skull & face are treated at the same time as the wearing of the dental appliance. This is because the jaw joints are connected to the surrounding bones of the face & skull, so that if the jaw joints are out of position, then it is more than likely that the associated bones will also be affected and need repositioning. Craniosacral therapy is an extremely gentle, safe and non-invasive treatment that gently coaxes the bones of the face and skull back into their optimal position.

How long will I receive treatment?

This is determined largely by the extent of the injury to your cranial bones & the bones of your face, as well as the length of time you have been untreated & by your age. Severe injuries that have been untreated for several years may take many treatments. Younger people generally heal faster, as their systems are still flexible. The length of treatment time can be estimated during your first Craniosacral treatment.

What should I expect after my Craniosacral treatment?

For many people, Craniosacral treatments generate a feeling of relaxation & well being, with an accompanying lessening of painful symptoms. However, sometimes for the first 24-36 hours after a treatment, especially in the first 2-3 treatments, there can be an increase in pain & symptoms, which then disappear. If this should happen to you, the most important thing to do is rest, drink lots of water, sleep if you feel like it or take a warm, Epsom salts bath.
